If there’s one thing we know for sure about summers in New England, it’s that they seem to go by in no time at all. Blink and you’ll miss your chance to bask under sunny skies on sandy shores without a care in the world. That’s why we jotted down our favorite ways to enjoy a good ol’ fashioned beach day here in New England. Whether you’re heading north or south, here are our tips for making the most of a summer day by the sea.
1. Get there early. If you’re from the general Boston area, you know not to mess around with beach traffic. Set your alarm so you can hit the road before the rest of the crowds. Plus, first one on the beach gets the best spot in the sand AND the mid-morning sunshine.
2. Grab a coffee on the way. If you’re heading down the south shore, we love Marylou’s—they are scattered every few miles as you travel towards the Cape. With an impressive abundance of flavor options, this classic joint is bound to be a hit no matter who’s in your crew.
3. Pack snacks. Nobody ever said, “we have too many snacks,” right? Fill your cooler with sandwiches, sweet treats, chips (a beach staple!), and lots of water. Beach days are made infinitely better when you know you can stay for hours without needing to hit pause to find provisions.
4. Lather up. Sunscreen is your friend, especially at the beach. The sun’s rays are stronger than ever on the shore in the summer—sunscreen now will save you from a serious burn later.
5. Stop in at a seafood shack. Is there anything better than an après-beach lobster roll with a side of onion rings or fries? As you make your way home after a blissful beach day, keep the fun going and grab some dinner—if you’re on the north shore, Woodman’s of Essex is a great, classic option.
So, there you have it: the perfect New England beach day. A summery mix of sunshine, sand, and seafood.
